Cultivating your online identity

I read over the article that Mr. Corso posted, and I found it interesting. I do not think that it is fair for people to discriminate a potential employee because of pictures they have posted from either high school or college. College is supposed to be a time for people to have fun and make social connections with different people. It is a place where people can make mistakes and learn from them. If we didn’t make mistakes now, then we wouldn’t learn any life lessons. We would also be in big trouble in the future when we got out into the real world. I think that a person should be hired strictly on their experience, grades, and their personality. So what if a person has a couple pictures of themselves online drinking with friends? I think that just as long as the pictures don’t contain any drugs or any extreme activities are taken place, that they should not affect their chances of getting a job. I’m sure many of those people who are searching for online content of potential employees have done the same exact thing at one point in their life. I mean don’t people always say, “live it up while you can!”?
On the other hand, I definitely agree with the fact that online blogging such as posting resumes are very useful. I never even knew it was possible to post your resumes online until I discovered RIC (Regional Internship Center). I recently joined the cite and a week after posting my resume, I received a phone call from a guy asking me to come in for an interview. I haven’t had my interview yet, but if I get the internship it will be for the summer. I definitely recommend that you guys check it out! ---> http://www.ric-swpa.org/index.html

Dear Friend,

After much thought, I have decided
to leave 'Thought & Humor'.

The reasons are many but they all boil
down to this: Nobody writes me anymore
so it must mean that they don't like me
or my college jokes, riddles, cartoons
or funny pictures:O(

I was hoping people would contact me
by posting a kind message in the
"comments" on my blog but few have.

Goodbye,
Howdy

P.S. All of you liberals can now be happy
because I am giving up. You have finally
won after 10 years of publishing...

P.P.S. The sad song playing on my blog
really fits my mood! You know I think
that I might have possibly visited your
site awhile back. Do you remember
or am I wrong?

I can see where you are coming from Leah. Who has the right to judge you from a picture? No one really. I suppose that pictures can reveal some aspects of a person's personality, but how much?

Probably not enuogh to know if this person would not be able to successfully perform the duties of their career.

Some of the most dedicated and successful people consume alcohol and "party."

However, if a person chooses to post pictures online they should recognize the fact that they have just made them public and available for any one who desires to see them.

Leah -
I agree with you and think you made a good point when you said that the employers probably made some of the same mistakes or took part in the same activities when they were in college too. You're absolutely right, I'm sure they did, so who are they to judge?

I also agree that if the pictures aren't too explicit then what is the harm? You are right, people should only be judged on experience, grades, and how they will perform in the workplace. Personal lives shouldn't matter!!

Leah,
I definitely agree with you! I've had so many people judge me because of the pictures on facebook! I really don't think that it is right to actually judge a person by pictures they have on the internet. Pictures say a thousand words, but they don't say everything!
